Even though I love solar eclipses, I generally don’t get too excited about occultations and transits. But this was different. I didn’t have to chase it – it came to me! The entire transit of Mercury on May 9, 2016, was visible from my home in Toronto, and it was a beautiful spring day. Knowing that a planet was upon the face of the sun gave me that excitement that eclipses bring – that sense that I am consciously participating in the solar system. So I got out my long lens and a solar filter and looked up.
