Partial Solar Eclipse 4 January 2011

A partial solar eclipse pales in comparison to a total eclipse – but it is an eclipse nonetheless. On 4 January 2011, much of Africa and Asia witnessed a partial eclipse, and observers with clear views got some great photographs. Here is my fave! The Sun being eclipsed by the Moon AND the International Space Station! Astronomy rocks. Thierry Legault shot this great image from Oman in eastern Africa.

This eclipse is part of a series of eclipses called Saros 151. There are 72 eclipses in this series – the first took place in 1776 and last one will be in 3056. That’s over 1280 years of eclipses – all related! Stick around…
